CULTURE NOTE: |
The culture of 개강파티 at Korean universities is important for students to build camaraderie and relieve stress as they start a new term. These events help freshmen adapt to university life and foster relationships between senior and junior students. Typically, there are various types of 개강파티, including:
Orientation and MT (Membership Training): Universities host orientation and MT for freshmen, lasting one or two nights, with activities like games, team-building, singing, and dancing.
Departmental and Club Parties: Departments and clubs organize their own parties, usually in the evening, often involving meals and drinking. Excessive drinking was common in the past but is decreasing now. (Source)
Returning Students’ Adaptation: Returning students from military service participate to readjust to school life, which helps them quickly adapt to university life and positively impacts their academic and social activities. (Source)
