Lesson 1

By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to:

  • Interpretive communication: Understand and summarize key information from others’ self-introductions.
  • Interpersonal communication: Ask and answer questions about personal backgrounds, adapting speech styles to fit various contexts.
  • Presentational communication: Create a self-introduction video suitable for a YouTube channel.
  • Intercultural communication: Learn culturally appropriate ways for ice breaking with Koreans in different settings.

Task 1. 블랙핑크 멤버들의 자기 소개 

Watch a variety show clip where members of the popular K-pop idol band Black Pink introduce themselves. Fill in the following summary chart using full Korean sentences in the polite formal speech style.

A student meets his/her/their Korean language professor in the beginning of the semester.

교수: 안녕하세요, ________ 씨. 만나서 반갑습니다. 지금 몇 학년이지요?

3. Create Your Own Dialogue with a Classmate

An intern meets a manager at a welcome dinner. Refer to the following culture note, and conduct the role play in a culturally appropriate manner. Each person should have at least four meaningful turns.

CULTURE NOTE

In recent years, an increasing number of companies in Korea are encouraging the use of polite speech to promote horizontal communication. According to a survey conducted by Job Korea, 80.7% of respondents expressed a preference for using polite speech at work, regardless of rank or age. However, 60% also reported their bosses still use familiar speech with their subordinates. (Source). JobPlanet, a Korean online platform that provides jobseekers with crowdsourced information about potential employers, recommended the following topics for small talk at work (Source):
– GOOD : Weather, commute, dramas, movies, YouTube, hobbies, food, travel, trends, etc.
– BAD : Politics, religion, dating, family, appearance, etc.

 

Task 3. 유튜버의 자기 소개

Imagine that you have started a YouTube channel. For your first video, introduce yourself by sharing your name, age, hometown, and your favorite things to do, eat, etc. Use a mix of polite informal and formal speech styles appropriately. Follow this script format.

안녕하세요, 구독자님들1! 저는 _____________(이)라고 합니다.

Share information about yourself in at least six sentences.
