By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to:

  • Interpretive communication: Understand and summarize a news report about stress management.
  • Interpersonal communication: Explain your own ways of managing your stress to others and describe changes of states/feelings.
  • Presentational communication: Record an informational video on managing stress.
  • Intercultural communication: Learn about the practices of community group exercise in Korea.

Task 1. 운동으로 스트레스를 풀어요1.

Watch a news clip about 스트레스 해소2 (Watch 00:00–01:40). Please answer the questions in full Korean sentences.

  1. 이 뉴스는 무엇을 말해요? (summarize the news clip in 4-5 sentences).
  2. 스트레스를 받으면 어때요? 그런데 운동을 하면 어때요? (00:24-00:34)
  3. 여러분은 어떻게 스트레스를 풀어요? (list at least 2 ways to you relieve your stress)

CULTURE NOTE: 야외 운동기구 (Open Gyms in Korea)

Lesson 4 Picture While walking in a neighborhood in Korea, you may come across a set of exercise equipment in a public park. What is it for? This equipment, called야외운동기구, meaning “outdoor exercise equipment”, is open to the public, 24/7.
These open gyms reflect Korea’s emphasis on community wellness. These facilities not only offer practical benefits but also serve as social hubs where people connect with their neighbors and engage in group fitness activities.
Neighborhood gyms have gained popularity due to their numerous benefits, including affordability, convenience, and the opportunity to enjoy nature. However, challenges include weather conditions, limited space, and potential overuse. Would you like to try out this equipment when you visit Korea?

Task 2. 공부 많이 해서 목이 아파요! 

Meet with your partner(s) and video-record your best performance. First, perform the provided dialogue by filling in the blanks. Then, create your own dialogue based on the given information.

1. Guided Conversation Practice

You came across your friend in the school library lounge. Your friend looks tired and stressed and is asking for your advice on staying healthy and managing stress.

가: 아, ____ , 안녕. 공부 많이 했지.

2. Create Your Own Dialogue with a Classmate

You are feeling stressed and tired because of your homework assignments. You want to ask your senior (선배) for advice and recommendations on staying healthy and managing stresses (e.g., working out, getting enough sleep, finding hobbies). Adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Each person should have at least five meaningful sentences.
  • Use the following grammar forms at least once: A–아/어지다, A–아/어 보이다, Noun 때문에, and Noun씩.
  • 후배 should use the polite informal speech style, and 선배should the familiar speech style.

Task 3. 즐거운 대학 생활하기

Record an informational video for incoming freshmen with tips for managing stress in college by introducing common stressors (e.g., exams, homework, loneliness), common symptoms (e.g., gloom, boredom, anger), various ways to relieve stress, and expected outcomes. Adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Include at least seven meaningful sentences.
  • Use the following grammar forms at least once: A–아/어지다, A–아/어 보이다, and V–아/어 있다.
  • Use informal polite speech style.
