  • Interpretive communication: Understand and summarize key information from a lost and found website.
  • Interpersonal communication: Share important details about your lost item.
  • Presentational communication: Write a reply message to the person who acquired your lost item.
  • Intercultural communication: Explore and understand Korea’s public safety.

Task 1. 분실물 웹사이트

After losing an item on the subway, you are checking the “LOST112” website to see if someone has picked it up and reported it to the police. Look at the first two items on the list and answer the questions in full sentences. Use the attached PDF file if the link does not work.

Lecture 20 Picture 1Korea is known as a country with good public safety. A representative example is that you can leave your laptop or phone unattended on a café table while using the restroom without fear of theft. Numerous YouTube videos capture foreigners’ astonishment at witnessing such occurrences. Additionally, many anecdotal videos feature foreigners who misplaced their belongings in Korea, only to find them untouched in the same location or returned by passersby, often leaving them amazed by this. Meet with your partner(s) and video-record your best performance. Conduct a short meeting for the following situations.

1. Guided Conversation Practice

Since you couldn’t find your item online, you’ve come to the police station to file a report. Fill in the blanks with appropriate responses.

경찰:     안녕하세요, 어떻게 오셨어요?

신고자: 분실물을 신고하러 왔어요.

경찰:     어떤 물건을 잃어버리셨어요?

신고자: ________________________________________________________________.

경찰:     어디서 잃어버리셨어요?

경찰:     언제 잃어버리셨어요? 몇 시쯤이었나요?

2. Create Your Own Dialogue with a Classmate

You lost your favorite _____. Feeling frustrated, you meet your friend and explain what happened. Ask and answer relevant questions to share as many details as possible (e.g., where, when, how you lost the item). Make sure to switch roles and record both conversations. Adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Each person should speak at least four meaningful sentences.
  • Use the following grammar forms at least once: V–아/어 버리다, V–(으)ㄹ 뻔하다, and V–았/었다가.
  • Use a speech style of your choice.

You’ve received a message from someone who found an item you lost. Write a reply expressing your gratitude, explaining how the item was lost, and asking for details on where and when you can pick it up. Adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Include at least seven meaningful sentences.
  • Use the following grammar forms at least once V–아/어 버리다, V–(으)ㄹ 뻔하다, and V–았/었다가
  • Use the formal and informal polite speech styles.
