By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to:

  • Interpretive communication: Comprehend basic directions to specific places.
  • Interpersonal communication: Ask for and give directions to particular locations.
  • Presentational communication: Create a promotional video describing directions using a map.
  • Intercultural communication: Understand the use of color-coded traffic lines in Korea.

Task 1. 식당 찾아 가기

A Mukbang (먹방1) YouTuber is heading to a restaurant. Watch the video about the directions (1:23–2:05 only) and answer the following questions in full Korean sentences.

1. 남영역 1번 출입구에서 첫번째2 횡단보도3까지 어떻게 가요?

2. 첫번째 횡단보도에서 편의점 CU까지 어떻게 가요?

3. 편의점 CU에서 식당까지 어떻게 가요?

4. 지도4를 보고 식당이 어디에 있는지 맞혀5 보세요.

 

Helpful Vocabulary:

꺾다 to turn straight 곡선을 타다 to take the curve, follow the curve
살짝 slightly, a little 총총총 An onomatopoeic word used to describe the way of walking quickly or with small steps
빠지다 to veer off, branch off 골목 alley, narrow street

In 2011, Yoon Seok-deok, a highway official, proposed using color-coded lines on roads to reduce accidents after a mistake at Ansan Junction. Despite legal concerns, the pink and green lines were first implemented at the Seo-Seoul tollgate and proved effective. By 2017, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport confirmed their usefulness, and in 2021, the Road Traffic Act was amended to legalize the practice (Source). By 2024, color-coded lines were installed on 676 highways and over 1,000 roads nationwide. Since their introduction, accidents at interchanges have decreased by 27%, and fatalities and serious injuries at intersections in Seoul have fallen by 43% (Source). Color-coded guidance lines are widely appreciated by many drivers.

2. Create Your Own Dialogue with a Classmate

Imagine you are visiting a high school friend at their university in another state. While touring the campus, ask for directions to places you are interested in. Use an actual university map to explain how to get to different locations. Adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Each person should speak at least four meaningful sentences.
  • Use the following grammar forms at least once: Passive verbs, V–자마자, and V–(으)니까
  • Use the familiar speech style.

You are creating a promotional video for your school. Choose a popular restaurant nearby and explain the route from the main gate to the restaurant, showing a map in your video. Adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Include at least six meaningful sentences.
  • Use the following grammar forms at least once: Passive verbs, V–자마자, and V–(으)니까.
  • Use the polite informal an formal speech styles.
