By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to:

  • Interpretive communication: Identify general information about a Korean holiday.
  • Interpersonal communication: Describe a Korean holiday and discuss how it is commemorated.
  • Presentational communication: Create a video proposing a new national holiday.
  • Intercultural communication: Understand the traditions and meanings of contemporary Korean celebrations.

Task 1. 스승1의 날

Watch the video (00:07–01:14 only) introducing Teacher’s Day in Korea and answer the following questions in English.

  1. 스승의 날은 뭐 하는 날이에요?
  2. 은사2의 날은 언제, 어떻게 생겼어요?
  3. 은사의 날이 스승의 날로 바뀐 해3는 언제예요?
  4. 왜 스승의 날을 5월 15일로 바꿨어요?

Helpful Vocabulary:

표현하다 to express 병중에 있다 to be ill 퇴직하다 to retire
위문하다 to visit someone to comfort 찾아 뵙다 to visit 주변 nearby
참여하다 to participate 정하다 to decide 민족 people, ethnic group
창제하다 to invent 백성 people, subjects 살피다 to look after
탄신일 birthday (usually of a notable figure) 변경하다 to change, alter

발렌타인 데이 (Valentine’s Day): 2월 14일
In Korea, Valentine’s Day is a day when women typically express their love by giving chocolates to men.
화이트 데이 (White Day): 3월 14일
On this day, men give return gifts to women. They usually give candy, chocolates, and various other gifts to express their romantic feelings.

블랙 데이 (Black Day): 4월 14일
Black Day is a day when people who did not receive any gifts on Valentine’s Day or White Day gather to eat 짜장면 (black bean noodles) and console each other. The name “Black Day” originates from the black sauce of 짜장면. It is primarily a day for singles to come together, share a meal, and comfort each other.

Task 2. 한글날

Meet with your partner(s) and video-record your best performance. Conduct a conversation for the following situations.

1. Guided Conversation Practice

You are talking with your friend about Hangeul Day (한글날). Perform the conversation by filling in the blanks with appropriate responses.

가: 어? 다음주에 한글날이 있네? ________________________________?

나: 한글날은 세종대왕의 한글 창제1를 기념하려고 만든 거야.

가: 공휴일이지? _______________________________________________?

나: 맞아. 직장이나 학교에 안 가는 대신 한글의 아름다움과 우수성을 체험하기2 위해

여러 가지  행사에 참여하기도 해.

가: 오, 그래? 한글날이 그렇게 중요한 날인 줄 몰랐어.

가: 나도 _________________________________________________________.

나: 좋은 생각이야! 집에서 쉬느라고 좋은 기회3를 놓치면 안 되잖아?

가: 그럼_______________________________________________________.

나: 좋아! 그때 만나자!

 

2. Create Your Own Dialogue with a Classmate

Choose a Korean holiday you would like to discuss (e.g., Chuseok, Seollal, Hangeul Day, Children’s Day). Have a conversation with your partner about the holiday, including its significance, traditions, and how it is celebrated. Then, plan an activity related to the holiday together. Adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Each person should speak at least four meaningful sentences.
  • Use the following grammar forms at least once: A–(으)ㄴ/V–는 것이다, V–느라고, and V–는 대신
  • Use the familiar speech style.

Task 3. 내가 만드는 공휴일/기념일

Imagine you have the authority to create a new national holiday. Record a video introducing the holiday’s name, date, and significance. Be sure to explain the reasons behind your choices. Adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Include at least six meaningful sentences.
  • Use the following grammar forms at least once: A–(으)ㄴ/V–는 것이다, V–느라고, and V–는 대신
  • Use the formal and informal polite speech styles.
