CULTURE NOTE |
Consistent practice and effort are the shortcuts to success. In Korea, there are many proverbs that emphasize the importance of practice, such as ‘공든 탑이 무너지랴 (A well-built tower will not collapse)’, ‘천리 길도 한 걸음부터 (A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step)’, and ‘열 번 찍어 안 넘어 가는 나무 없다 (There is no tree that will not fall with ten strikes)’. An anecdote about Han Seok-bong (한석봉, 1543-1605), who became a renowned calligrapher of Joseon through painstaking practice, illustrates this principle well.
Han Seok-bong’s mother supported his calligraphy studies by making rice cakes for ten years. After four years of study, Seok-bong returned home, missing his mother. She turned off the oil lamp and had him write while she sliced rice cakes in the dark. When the light was turned back on, her slices were perfect, but his writing was messy and wavy. She scolded him and sent him back to study. Seok-bong then completed the full ten years of study and became a renowned calligrapher of Joseon. (source)
